Advancing equity is a complex and ongoing process that requires a holistic approach to create lasting change. Through the Living Root Bridge Stance©, I offer a unique approach and framework to DEI that is rooted in cultural wisdom and supported by research and practice.
With Humility, Hope and Heart, a Human-Centred Approach
The Living Root Bridge Stance draws inspiration from the living root bridges of Meghalaya, India. These bridges are created by weaving together living roots over time. Similarly, the Living Root Bridge Stance weaves together the critical, inquiry, and compassionate stances to create a holistic framework for advancing equity - one filled with humility, hope and heart. By emphasizing the interconnectedness of these stances and the importance of ongoing growth and development, the Living Root Bridge Stance provides a powerful tool for anyone committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive society.
The critical stance involves understanding power dynamics and how they contribute to systemic inequities and marginalization. By embracing a decolonization approach, educators can work towards shifting these dynamics in their learning environments and examine other ways of knowing and being.
The inquiry stance emphasizes the value of lived experience; I guide learners through a process of self-reflexivity as a way to examine our lived experience of tensions and pedagogic (dis)comfort, to challenge our conditioning. This stance also helps individuals understand the complexities of different experiences and perspectives, leading to more inclusive interactions.
The compassionate stance develops our skills to be present, kind and compassionate towards ourselves and others - with a collective goal of creating a more equitable society.
Building a More Inclusive World Together
I started Living Root Bridge to create a more equitable and inclusive world. Through the Living Root Bridge Stance, I offer a unique approach to DEI that is rooted in cultural wisdom and supported by research and practice. I believe that another way is possible - one in which we advance equity and reimagine possibilities, together.
